The expansion works of the Laredo fish market will begin at the beginning of 2024

The Minister of Development, Territorial Planning and Environment of the Government of Cantabria, Roberto Media, has announced the tender for the expansion of the Laredo fishermen’s market, whose works, which will have an execution period of ten months, could begin at the beginning of 2024.

The tender was announced on the same day as San Martín, patron saint of the Pejina Fishermen’s Guild, and represents good and long-awaited news for this sector since the project has a delay inherited from the previous legislature. It was scheduled to go out to public tender last March and that execution would begin in October 2023, and now it seems that it will do so at the beginning of next year.

The expansion will double the sales pitch of the Brotherhood, which will increase from 460 square meters to 848, thus alleviating the “essential” need of the Cabildo. The new cold and freezing chambers will also be located there. According to the Patron of the Brotherhood of San Martín, Adolfo San Román, in the coastal areas of bonito and bocarte they are forced to refuse access to boats due to lack of space and if they do not work more it is due to lack of means. Now, the imminent tender for the works will provide a solution to these deficiencies.

The head of the Ministry of Development already visited Laredo last August to report on the proximity of the tender, whose order he signed last Friday. In that meeting, even with César Nates as the High Patron, Media emphasized his commitment to Laredo, something that he repeated after the high mass of San Martín. The cost of the work is 953,995 euros. Regarding this, the counselor boasted that despite being a large project, which entails slower procedures, they have managed it with agility.
